National Ride of Silence

Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees.  The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured. Please check your local bike clubs and shops for details of Rides of Silence near you.

May 16-17: NYC to Philly

From cheesecake to cheesesteak! The East Coast Greenway Alliance’s inaugural New York City-to-Philadelphia Greenway Ride travels from one iconic city to another, with lots of beautiful Garden State greenway in between. The 2-day, 130-mile fundraising ride will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17 with hundreds of riders from the region and beyond. After departing Manhattan on Saturday, May 16, we’ll end for the day in Princeton, New Jersey, and head on the next day for an end-of-ride celebration in Philadelphia on Sunday, May 17.

Proceeds from this ride will benefit the nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance. In particular, your fundraising will help accelerate the development of the route in New York City, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Roughly 1,000 miles of our Maine to Florida route is on protected greenways, and our organization is working daily to move the entire route off-road as close to 2030 as possible.

National Bike to Work Day

THIRD FRIDAY IN MAY: The month of May is National Bike Month. National Bike to Work Day takes place on the third Friday in May.

A growing number of various bicycle-related events will be held in communities nationwide during National Bike Month which includes National Bike To Work Day.

In the United States, from the year 2000 to 2011, the number of bicycle commuters grew by more than 47 percent.

National Bike to Work Day promotes the bicycle as a healthy and safe alternative for commuting to work.

Safe Streets for Everyone: 21st Annual National Bike Summit

Being on a bike is fundamentally about joy. It elevates an errand or the slog to work from just another task on our to-do list to “I get to do this!” Being on a bike should be about the freedom we feel, not the fear.

At the 21st National Bike Summit, advocates will come together to collaborate on a shared vision of Safe Streets for Everyone, this year’s Summit theme. In plenary and panel sessions, keynote talks, poster presentations, and expanded networking opportunities, Summit attendees will learn how to influence federal policy and how their peers across the country are confronting the public health crisis facing America: people who bike, walk, or use a wheelchair are in increasing danger on our roads, preventing more Americans from enjoying the benefits of biking and physical activity.

Dive into the developing Summit agenda to see what sessions, mobile workshops, and plenary speakers we already have in store!
